The Betty and Norman Levan Hall
9/29/09
The college has installed a web cam that updates every 60 seconds. Click here to view!
The construction of Levan Hall is on schedule, even though it is a little bit quiet while the concrete continues to cure and the front sections are backfilled and compacted (see photo of stem walls below; note the huge piece of granite that caused some excavation problems this summer). Once the concrete is cured, the huge pile of dirt near Peterson Student Center will be used for backfill around the outer walls.
The dry stack retaining wall directly behind Weigle Hall is complete, and another wall is being built on the south side of that back egress road (see photo below). Some large boulders will be placed between the road and the north retaining wall (closest to the building) to serve as a bit of a barrier. There are some flags behind Weigle that indicate where two handicap parking spots will be located, as well as a turn-around/delivery area for mail carriers and other vendors. Note that the red horizontal line on the back wall of Weigle indicates the finish grade of where the soil level will be. Another retention wall will be built between Levan and Weigle.
Water gathered in the detention tank will be used for landscaping around the new building.
Concrete has been poured on the east side of the Fine Arts Building that will be the stem walls for the outer stair case that should be in place by early November.
A pre-install 10’x10’ mock-up of the concrete floor finish will is curing on the ML Placita near the blue dumpsters. Once cured and polished, the architects can approve the final finish (see photo below; note the radiant heating coils).
Construction hours are 7:00a-3:30p, Monday through Friday.
Please keep an eye out for designated walkways and be respectful of the construction boundaries, which are blocked off by fencing and marked by Do Not Enter signs. Additional information is posted as it becomes available.
Levan Hall is being built as a LEED Silver Certified Building and the blue open-end dumpsters on the Meem Library Placita are to sort construction debris for the this certification. Levan Hall is located between the Fine Arts Building and Weigle Hall, and is expected to be open for classes in Fall 2010.
