Construction and Renovation Updates
11/2/09
The Betty and Norman Levan Hall
The college has installed a web cam that updates every 60 seconds. Click here to view!
The backfilling on the east side of the building is almost complete (we’re waiting for the placement of more concrete blocks) and backfilling on the west side will begin within the next few days. The stacked retaining walls around Weigle Hall are complete; the wall is making its way around the corner to Levan.
The outer stair case to the Fine Arts Building is virtually complete, and will have a temporary railing for now. The FAB Studio will re-open for use on Monday November 2.
The 10’x10’ mock-up of the concrete floor finish was polished and this has been approved. The color? “Pecan Tan.” This will be the polished color of the concrete floors within Levan in the public areas and bathrooms. The concrete floors in offices and classrooms will be covered either by carpet or cork flooring.
Concrete for both the lower level and plaza level floors will be poured the week of November 9. This is a slight delay due to our recent winter weather. The noise associated with this will be limited to the concrete trucks maneuvering about the area.
Also during this time, a concrete cap will be poured over the new stonework at the side of Peterson and the PSC balcony. Once dried and weather-proofed, a new railing will be put in place, allowing for the balcony to be re-opened around November 16.
What comes next? As the concrete is being poured, we may see workers using scaffolding to place concrete blocks on the outer walls of the building, gaining height. After a week or so, workers will be able to work on increasing height from the inside. Then, probably in late November, we’ll see the crane back on campus to bring in more tall steel beams.
Construction hours are 7:00a-3:30p, Monday through Friday.
Please keep an eye out for designated walkways and be respectful of the construction boundaries, which are blocked off by fencing and marked by Do Not Enter signs. Additional information is posted as it becomes available.
Levan Hall is being built as a LEED Silver Certified Building and the blue open-end dumpsters on the Meem Library Placita are to sort construction debris for the this certification. Levan Hall is located between the Fine Arts Building and Weigle Hall, and is expected to be open for classes in Fall 2010.
