Construction and Renovation Updates
11/17/09

The Betty and Norman Levan Hall

The college has installed a web cam that updates every 60 seconds. Click here to view!

The backfilling on both sides of the building is complete. The stacked retaining wall has made its way around the corner to Levan, and is just a few blocks shy of being 100% complete.  These last blocks will have to wait until spring, when the stucco is done.

The concrete for the lower and plaza levels was successfully poured last week, and the placement of concrete blocks on the outer walls of the building has begun. Crews will soon be able to work on increasing height from the inside, too.

During this week, a concrete cap will be poured over the new stonework at the side of Peterson and the PSC balcony.  Once dried and weather-proofed, a new railing will be put in place, allowing for the balcony to be re-opened around November 23 (this is just a week later than initially anticipated).

Also this week, the area behind Weigle should be graded and paved, and you may notice a trench open on the east side of the Levan site.  This is for gas and water tie-ins, although we are not expecting any utility shut-offs this week.

Around Monday November 23, expect the crane back on campus to help install more steel beams.  After the beams, the cycle returns: steel decking, radiant heat, wire mesh, and then pouring concrete for the top floor, hopefully in mid-December.

Later this month and well into December, as weather permits, grading will take place above and behind the fish pond, north of Levan.  This work will be to provide appropriate ramping to Levan from the upper placita level, and may involve rock cutting.  The rock cutting can be quite noisy and jarring.
