Construction and Renovation Updates
March 17, 2011

New Residential Center

Excavation is well on its way for this project!  The clearing of trees will likely be complete by Friday, March 18, however the mass excavation (compacting, as well as building up parts of the site and the staging area) will continue for several more weeks.  The 5000 square foot staging area to be located on the east side of the fenced area is expected to be ready for use in four to five weeks.  NOTE: there will be the most excavation at the west end, where the seminar building will be located.  The floor level of the top floor of this building will be about level with the road.

The pink flags in the area are designating three water collection ponds that must be in place before much else can be done, in order to catch any run off and sediment before it rushes into the arroyo (if we ever get any rain!).  These ponds are permanent, as once the project is complete, they will catch any overflow from the two 10,000-gallon cisterns that will be underground.

The removal of the black-top along the lowers road will begin at the west end, near the Student Health Office (students: please access the SHO through the lowers courtyard during construction!).  Once the black-top is removed, crews will dig down about two feet, pushing that dirt into the building site to serve as additional fill.

The addition of 15 parking spaces to Student Lot D is moving forward as scheduled.  This parking lot is currently closed and should be open for parking on Saturday March 25.  Until then, additional parking is available on the east side of the track.  (See the Aerial View below for a visual).

This LEED Silver residential center will have 45 beds in three buildings, as well as a seminar/tutor office building on the west end.  The tentative plan is for these rooms to be open for use in summer 2012.  We hope to post plans for these buildings soon.

Crews may be on campus before 8:00a, however engines will not start up until 8:00a.  Note that large vehicles will be entering and exiting campus from Camino Cruz Blanca, using the main entry road, and the road to Lowers.

Our web-cam is on the way and we hope to have viewing available within the next few weeks.

As always, we will keep you posted!

The Betty and Norman Levan Hall

Levan Hall, home of the St. John’s College Graduate Institute is complete.  Staff and tutors are moved in and classes are taking place.

Levan Hall was planned as a LEED Silver Certified building.  However, it is likely it will reach a Gold level certification!  The official certification will take several months.

Below are current pictures of the building.

Irrigation Work

Near the entrance to campus, new irrigation pipes have been installed to service the plantings along the road and sidewalk leading to the SAC driveway.  A new automatic watering system is in use on the soccer field, and is working well.
