The construction of the college’s new residential center continues to be on schedule for a June 1, 2012 opening.
Indoor crews are currently placing glass doors in aluminum frames, as well as putting up sheet rock and beginning bathroom tiling. All windows and doors are expected to be in place by the middle of January. The sheetrock and tiling will likely be complete in three to four weeks.
The interior is currently being heated by the radiant floor heating. The gas fireplaces for the common rooms are installed, hooked up and ready to go. Individual dorm room radiators will be installed towards the end of the project.
Outdoor crews are working to complete the roof of the seminar building (the others are complete). Also, crews are using fine-cut stones to build walls within the complex, and they are coming out quite nicely. Stucco is going on in three parts: scratch coat, brown coat, then the color coat. The senior resident apartment will be the first to have all coats (this is located on the east side).
Over the next few weeks, concrete will be poured for the large sets of steps in front of dorms B and C. These areas have been tented in order to keep in the heat. The concrete for the three walking bridges (see photo below) has been poured, and these are now waiting for railings.
Also taking place in January will be the placement of the photo voltaic system on the roofs of dorms Polyhymnia and Euterpe in the Lower Dorm Area. The company doing this work, Positive Energy, will present information on these systems to students on January 18.
The interior floors of the dorms will primarily be polished concrete, with tile in the bathrooms. The dorm bathrooms will have two showers, three sinks, two toilets, and “cubby” shelving with baskets for storing toiletries.
Carpet will be placed in tutor offices in the seminar building, and the seminar rooms will have cork floors. The seminar building will have some air conditioned spaces, as well as a fireplace in the meeting room, which is located on the top floor and will open onto the gathering placita. The gathering placita between the library and the main entrance to the lower dorm area will be worked on during summer 2012.
This LEED Silver residential center is made possible by Warren and Barbara Winiarski and other friends of St. John's College.
Gates to the site open at 8:00a. Note that large vehicles will be entering and exiting campus from Camino Cruz Blanca, using the main entry road, and the road to Lowers.

Irrigation Work
Near the entrance to campus, new irrigation pipes have been installed to service the plantings along the road and sidewalk leading to the SAC driveway. A new automatic watering system is in use on the soccer field, and is working well.
