Construction and Renovation Updates
December 10, 2009
The Betty and Norman Levan Hall
The college has installed a web cam that updates every 60 seconds. Click here to view!
Believe it or not, the winter weather has not put crews very far behind with Levan Hall and the building is moving along nicely! NOTE: the plan is to have minimal work taking place while the college is closed for the holiday break.
Right now, crews are finishing up with the decking, welding it to the steel beams, so that the radiant heat can be added next week. After the radiant heat comes the wire mesh, then hopefully a concrete pour around December 18th. Other work taking place these days is happening INSIDE the building: framing for offices on the lower level, “rough-in” for electrical (putting conduit and electrical boxes within the wall frames before the walls go up), and grinding the exposed concrete on the lower level (polish and sealing will wait until late spring to avoid heavy traffic damage).
Also next week, there will be some backfilling north and west of the building, as well as the positioning of steel metal studs along the west side to frame the Lobby/Gallery area of the building that right now, is open to the elements. This will be an open, interior, area. Temporary heaters will make their way inside to keep folks warm as well as provide a more welcoming environment for the upper level concrete.
The concrete cap has been poured over the new stonework at the side of Peterson and the PSC balcony and FAB stairway railings have been installed. Some stucco repair will need to take place and some other adjustments before the balcony can re-open, however it should be open before 2nd semester begins.
The sidewalk pour behind Weigle was delayed until Friday 12/11. The sidewalk will lead from a handicap parking space and a loading/delivery parking space on the south west end of the building. Weather permitting, the next step will be to do a little more paving, grading, and gravel work in that area.
The open trench on the east side of the Levan site remains open while we await the arrival of a piece of equipment.
Later this month and into January, as weather permits, grading will take place above and behind the fish pond, north of Levan. This work will be to provide appropriate ramping to Levan from the upper placita level, and may involve rock cutting. The rock cutting can be quite noisy and jarring.
Another head’s up, there will be a one-day electrical shut off for FAB and the Library during winter break, around January 11, 2010. And for those fans of the crane, it won’t be back until mid January, to work on the roof structure.
