New Residential Center

The crane has been staying busy placing 95% of the planks for the roofs of all buildings.  Once that’s complete, around October 10, crews will install the substrait (a slurry of concrete and 14” of insulation), then the TPO membrane (a woven plastic, like on the roof of Levan Hall).  By mid-October, it’s likely the crane will be removed from the site, though it may  return at a later date to lower the big steel beams for the three bridges (between buildings A and B and the west gathering placita, and between building C and the smaller, center gathering placita.  See the Aerial View below).

On the 2nd floors of the buildings, the 4” topping slabs are 50% complete, with concrete being delivered through window openings.  Radiant heating pipes are also being placed, and this process should be complete in all buildings by mid-October.

The installation of glass for the first floor windows has begun and all first floor windows should be done by October 7.  2nd floor windows should be complete by the end of October.  The first floors are also ahead of second floors with regard to interior walls and framing, with the rough-in of plumbing and electrical work just about finished.  The top floors’ exterior CMU walls are scheduled to be finished by October 5, at which time the interior framing will begin.  Exterior stucco work is scheduled to begin around October 10.

The interior floors of the dorms will primarily be polished concrete, with tile in the bathrooms.  Carpet will be placed in tutor offices in the seminar building, and the seminar rooms will have cork floors.

Late summer rains filled the 20,000 cisterns to the degree that overflow filled the detention ponds twice.  The stored water will be used in the spring, on plantings in the area.

Backfill work continues throughout the site, and underground utilities are 90% connected.  The concrete “U” at the east end of the project will house a dumpster.

The building structures of this LEED Silver residential center, including walls, glass, and roofs, will be complete and heated by mid-November, at which time crews will move inside to do the interior work.  Rooms are slated to be open for use in summer 2012.

Gates to the site open at 8:00a.  Note that large vehicles will be entering and exiting campus from Camino Cruz Blanca, using the main entry road, and the road to Lowers.

The Betty and Norman Levan Hall

UPDATE: Levan Hall has reached LEED Gold certification!  Congratulations to all who were involved with the careful planning and implementation necessary to create such a note-worthy “Green” building.

Levan Hall, home of the St. John’s College Graduate Institute is complete.  Staff and tutors are moved in and classes are taking place.

Below are current pictures of the building.

Irrigation Work

Near the entrance to campus, new irrigation pipes have been installed to service the plantings along the road and sidewalk leading to the SAC driveway.  A new automatic watering system is in use on the soccer field, and is working well.
